State-by-State breakout of possibly forfeited refund money
The Internal Revenue Service is holding a vast amount of money in 2023 in old, unclaimed tax refunds. Once again, it's nearly $1.5 billion that was never sent to around 1.5 million individual taxpayers.
The reason? Those folks didn't ask for it.
They neglected or forgot to file tax year 2019 returns back in 2020 to claim their refunds. They now have until July 17, 2023, to get their money.
Wait, I hear tax-savvy long-time readers asking, isn't this unclaimed refunds deadline usually on Tax Day three years down the road? Yes. But 2020, the year that 2019 returns were filed, was unusual. You might remember. We were in the crazed early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 filing due date was pushed to July 15, 2020.
As my blog post on this latest batch of unclaimed refunds notes, tax law starts the three-year claiming deadline on the tax due date, not strictly three calendar years. That would be July 15, 2020, but since the 15th this year is on Saturday, it's bumped to Monday, July 17, 2023.
One thing remains the same, though. If these taxpayers don't claim their 2019 tax year refunds by this July 17, Uncle Sam gets to keep their refund money. They'll never get another chance to get it.
The table below details just how much unclaimed money is due taxpayers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

If you think some of this unclaimed tax cash is yours, be sure to file your 2019 return by July 17, 2023. Or sooner. You don't have to wait until the last minute. My previously mentioned post has more on how to claim the old money.
And it bears repeating: Miss this deadline and you forever forfeit that three-year-old unclaimed refund.
