Memorial Day officially is Monday, May 29. But a lot of people will be traveling back home then, so it's today that most friends and family across the United States are gathering.

Many will make sure to acknowledge Memorial Day. It's the national day of remembrance of those who died in service to the United States.

The graphic below from the U.S. Census Bureau, using the Department of Defense's Defense Manpower Data Center statistics, has the tally of those military service personnel who gave all at more than 1.2 million.

That tragic figure is this Memorial Day weekend's By the Numbers figure.

We've tended to get away from the true meaning of Memorial Day. Sure, there still are parades. And we pause for a moment of silence at other, more festive holiday events to recognize those we lost doing their military duties.

I'm not here to buzzkill your long weekend. Enjoy it with all those who've gathered to celebrate with you.

But also take another break to more fully acknowledge, and never forget, that we're all able to go about our business and fun and general life thanks in large part to the men and women who served our nation.
