Shopping and travel are summer staples. They also involve taxes, as discussed last week at my other tax blog.

Bankrate Taxes Blog icon The annual round of August back-to-school state sales tax holidays began this weekend. Sixteen states have waived sales taxes on a variety of purchases.

Also last week, travelers who thought they might get a refund of airline ticket taxes when the Federal Aviation Administration authorization lapsed in July got bad new last week.

Through some procedural maneuvers, a recessed Senate approved the House FAA bill, retroactively reinstating myriad ticket taxes. Since the taxes officially never lapsed, the ticket tax refunds are no longer available.
